First Look at Frodo: Elijah Wood Returns in „The Hunt for Gollum“

The ten images focus heavily on the Shire during autumn. Alongside Frodo, the gallery features numerous Hobbits, pumpkins and familiar Hobbiton scenery. Warner Bros. released the images around Hobbit Day on September 22, the shared birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins in Tolkien’s calendar.

Returning to Middle-earth

One of the most striking images shows Frodo approaching the unmistakable round green door of Bag End. Although the character is mainly seen from behind, the image marks the return of Elijah Wood to the role that made him internationally famous.

“The Hunt for Gollum” takes place between the events of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings.” The story focuses on the search for Gollum and expands upon events that are largely described by Gandalf and Aragorn in Tolkien’s original novels.

Andy Serkis Returns as Gollum

The new movie reunites several important members of the original Middle-earth films. Andy Serkis, who portrayed Gollum in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, is directing the new film and will once again perform as Gollum. Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf, while Lee Pace reprises his role as Thranduil.

Peter Jackson is also returning as a producer alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Production is currently taking place in New Zealand.

Coming to Cinemas in 2027

“The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 17, 2027. The December release continues the tradition established by Jackson’s original trilogy, which was released in consecutive holiday seasons from 2001 to 2003.

The first images already bring back the familiar atmosphere of the Shire – and offer fans their first official glimpse at the next cinematic journey through Middle-earth.
